Large Accommodation Block Legionella Control Project

Problem
An ageing building has had historical problems with fluctuating occupancy and therefore water turnover. Controlling legionella proliferation with a temperature monitoring regime was not effective. Mechanical alterations to the pipework would not solve the underlying problem.

Solution

Kirkee  successfully implemented a comprehensive legionella prevention plan for a large accommodation block. Our approach focused on creating an environment that was less conducive to legionella growth while maintaining the building's functionality.

Key elements of the project included:

  • Water Softener Installation: To reduce scale buildup, which can provide nutrients for legionella growth, we installed a water softener. This helped create a less hospitable environment for the bacteria.

  • Standard Legionella Remedial Actions: We implemented standard practices such as deadleg removal and pipework insulation to minimise stagnant water areas and prevent biofilm formation.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide Constant Dosing Unit: A unique aspect of our solution was the installation of a hydrogen peroxide constant dosing unit. This unit delivered safe levels of hydrogen peroxide into the water supply, effectively disrupting biofilms and preventing legionella proliferation. This method proved particularly effective in accommodating the building's fluctuating usage patterns.

By combining these strategies, Kirkee  was able to create a safer and healthier environment for the occupants of the accommodation block. Our project demonstrates our commitment to providing effective solutions for complex water treatment challenges.
